Our Cards

Christmas 2018

Our cards feature Scandinavian folklore and Christmas traditions from the Romantic era. This was a period of intensely renewed interest in legend and folklore, often accompanied by embellishment.

Tomtar were one particular subject of interest during this revival. Many of our cards feature these small hominids who maintained a legendary affection and respect for the land and all of its animals.

You will find other cards exploring various Scandinavian Christmas traditions from this period.

Tomte with Squirrels

It is late afternoon on an autumn day. The sun hangs low near the horizon and bathes everything in an eerie orange glow that seems to come from everywhere. The trees have lost their blanket of snow, but a thin smooth sheet still clings to the ground.

Tomtar had a deep affection for all animals and often provided treats for animals around the farm. Here one sits among Scandinavian squirrels, who are greedily devouring the pine nuts he has provided.

The sentiment for the card echoes our own alarm at how quickly the season has arrived.

Tomte with Moose

Tomte with Moose

It is an afternoon on an arctic early winter day. It is cold. The snow is falling; the air is beginning to dry. A haze has lifted. Everything shows a hint of blue. Close objects are clear, but the snow diffuses the view of distant objects. It provides a special softness to the background that brings the subject into immediate focus.

Tomtar were said to be excellent riders. One is shown here on a moose.

A tomte sitting atop a moose, the white beard, the pointed hat, the falling snow… it all seems magical. But then, there always was a magical sense about the Christmas holidays.

“The snow is blown.
The moose is loose.
The magic is just begun.
Happy Holidays!”
